I heard about the singer and songwriter Pink getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
What she said when accepting her award struck a chord. To quote: "There's a power in believing in yourself, And there's a power in making a decision that while you may not be the best that ever did it, you may not be the prettiest or the tallest or the funniest or the most talented or whatever it is you tell yourself you're not. But if you're stubborn and you don't give up and you work really hard, no one else can ever be you."
It's the word "stubborn" that stuck out. If she hadn't said that word, the rest of it wouldn't been any different than a thousand "no matter who you are, you can do it if you try" standard beige platitudes that are forgotten before the last syllable.
But I love that she said, "stubborn." This one word is the ingredient for any measure of success.
Let's look at some of the word's synonyms: Persistence. Determination. Discipline. Focus. Drive. Consistency. "Stubborn" is the motor in their meaning. "Stubborn" puts the foundation under all each one, strongly rising in the intent.
I love this word.
If a little kid is called "stubborn" they fold their arms, put their head down, stick out their lower lip and refuse to relent.
In our dreams, we have to be that little kid. We have to keep this energy directed and available for the accomplishments of that which we want out of our life, to finally do what we really love.
Stubbornness is the mortar between the bricks in our walk. Persist, be determined, be disciplined, all that. But keep that stubborn chip on your shoulder. You'll push through every obstacle, no matter how long it takes.
